Uganda’s wildlife is one of the reasons for thousands of tourists who visit this country per year. It consists of flora and fauna. The flora provides a wide variety of habitats for fauna. The list of habitats include tropical rain forests, mountains, swamps, fresh water lakes, swamps, savannah and woodlands. Highlighted below are the major species which make up Uganda’s fauna.
African Big fives
The African big fives are a great draw for Wildlife enthusiasts. These are the elephants, buffaloes, leopards, lions and Rhinoceros. There are called the African big fives because they were tough and hard to hunt on foot.
While in Uganda, you can only find the Rhinoceros in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. The other four are found in national parks like Queen, Murchison, Kidepo, Lake Mburo, and Semliki national park.
Other wild animals
Uganda’s parks and reserves are home to other wild animals like Zebras, Giraffes, bush bucks, heart beasts, topi, oribi, African golden cats, duikers, bush pigs, sitatunga, kobs and warthogs.
Apes and Primates
Other than the big game, Uganda is a prominent home for apes and primates. The list encompasses Gorillas, Chimpanzees, golden monkeys, red tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, bonobos, baboons, Uganda Mangabey and L’Hoest’s monkey.
Moreover, Uganda plays host to over 1020 species of birds, 142 species of reptiles, and 501 fish species, 86 species of amphibians and 1242 butterfly species.
