Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) are a species of hyena native to Africa, including Uganda. Here’s some information about spotted hyenas:
Species: Spotted hyenas belong to the family Hyaenidae and are the largest of the three hyena species, the other two being the striped hyena and the brown hyena.
Size
Adult spotted hyenas can reach a shoulder height of about 28 to 35 inches (70 to 90 cm) and weigh between 90 to 190 pounds (40 to 86 kg). Males are slightly larger than females.
Breeding
Spotted hyenas have a complex social structure centered around a matriarchal society. Females are dominant over males, and they form clans led by an alpha female. Breeding usually occurs within the clan, and females give birth to one to three cubs after a gestation period of around 110 days.
Way of Life
Spotted hyenas are primarily carnivorous and are known for their powerful jaws, adaptability, and intelligence. They are skilled hunters and also scavenge carcasses left behind by other predators. Hyenas are highly social animals and live in large groups called clans. They communicate using a variety of vocalizations, including the distinctive “laughing” calls that they are known for.
They are efficient scavengers and play a vital role in the ecosystem by cleaning up carrion and preventing the spread of diseases. They have strong digestive systems that allow them to consume and digest almost the entire carcass, including bones.
Where to find them in Uganda: Spotted hyenas can be found in several national parks and wildlife reserves in Uganda, including Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, and Kibale National Park. These parks provide suitable habitats with a combination of grasslands, woodlands, and water sources where hyenas can thrive.
It’s important to note that the distribution of hyenas within these parks can vary, and sightings are not guaranteed. However, these protected areas offer good opportunities to observe spotted hyenas in their natural habitats, especially during game drives or guided tours.
