Gorilla Habituation in Uganda – A Deeper Gorilla Trekking Experience

Gorilla habituation in Uganda is one of Africa’s most unique wildlife encounters, offering travelers an extended and unforgettable experience with mountain gorillas in their natural forest habitat. Unlike standard gorilla trekking, where visitors spend one hour with a gorilla family, the gorilla habituation experience gives you up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group alongside researchers, trackers, and park rangers.

This incredible adventure takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of the most famous gorilla destinations in Africa. Deep in the rainforest, visitors join conservation teams as they monitor gorilla behavior and help the gorillas gradually become familiar with human presence. It is a rare chance to witness mountain gorillas in a more natural and less visited environment.

How long is the Gorilla Permit Valid in Uganda?

A Gorilla permit is valid from the time you purchase it to the time of your trekking date. After the gorilla tracking date, the booking ID expires and the permit becomes invalid. This is why it is advisable you plan for your gorilla trek well in advance so that you are able to make it for the booked trekking date. But it is also well understandable that due to uncertainties sometimes, one may not make it for his/her booked date of trekking. With this, it advised you reschedule at least two weeks before your trekking date through contacting Uganda Wildlife Authority or your Tour operator.

Refunds/Cancellation Guidelines

Non Refundable: Gorilla Permits are non refundable. However, a refund can be made under the following circumstances;

  • UWA shall refund the full tracking fee, if the visitor fails to track due to illness, this will be at discretion of Warden in Charge and this clause only applies to visitors who have made their way to either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
  • Visitors who fail to track the gorillas (Mgahinga Gorilla National Park) as a result of their movement to the neighboring country shall receive a full refund on their permits.
  •
  • However, visitors who would track the whole day and fail to view the gorillas for one reason or another will be refunded 75% of the tracking fee. All refunds shall be effected at UWA Headquarters in Kampala through the Reservations Office.
  • UWA will retain the following percentages upon cancellations;

  • 0 – 8 days to tracking date – no refund
    9 – 45 days to tracking date – 75% (25% refund to client)
    46-90 days to tracking date – 50%
    91 days and above to tracking date – 25% (75% refund to client)
  •

No stand-by permits are sold in either Bwindi or Mgahinga any longer. However, if there is a ‘no-show’ or an individual was unable to track because of sickness and you happened to be there you certainly would be offered the permit for purchase by the National Park on spec. This would be at the current tracking fee. There are no provisions for discounts in such situations.

A plan of action to secure a permit whilst still in Kampala is to approach a tour operator that holds a permit during the period you would like to track. UWA can tell you who holds the permits for your interested dates and advise their contacts details. This is a bit of a shot in the dark approach to getting a permit but can prove to be fruitful although usually a tour operator or individual makes it known to UWA themselves that they have a permit available for resale.

What is the Cost of Gorilla Permits?

The cost of gorilla permits in Uganda depends on your residency status. For 2026, the official permit fees are US$800 for foreign non-residents, US$700 for foreign residents, US$500 for travelers from the rest of Africa, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. A gorilla permit allows you to trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and spend one unforgettable hour with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Because permits are limited and highly demanded, especially during peak safari seasons, early booking is strongly recommended.

How to Book Gorilla Permits in Uganda?

There are two main ways to book gorilla permits in Uganda—through a trusted local tour operator or directly online with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Booking through a tour operator is the easiest option for many travelers. You simply share your travel dates, passport details, and preferred trekking location, and the operator checks availability, reserves the permit, and handles payment for you. Many tour operators also arrange accommodation, transport, and guide services as part of a full gorilla trekking package, which makes planning your safari much easier. The second option is booking online directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) through Uganda Wildlife Authority. You can check permit availability, select your trekking date, and complete payment online. After payment, UWA sends confirmation for your booking. Whichever option you choose, it is best to book your gorilla permit 3 to 6 months in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, because permits for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are limited each day and can sell out quickly.

Cancellation for Gorilla Permits?

Gorilla permit cancellations in Uganda are managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and are subject to their booking terms and conditions. If you need to cancel your permit, the amount refunded usually depends on how early the cancellation is made before your trekking date. In general, cancellations made well in advance may qualify for a partial refund, while cancellations made close to the trekking date may attract higher charges or may not be refundable. Permit changes or rescheduling can sometimes be possible depending on availability. If you booked through a tour operator, it is best to contact them directly as soon as possible—they can guide you through the cancellation or help move your permit to another available date. If you booked directly, you can reach out to the Uganda Wildlife Authority for the latest cancellation policy and assistance. Because gorilla permits are limited and in high demand, travelers are advised to confirm travel dates carefully and consider travel insurance for extra flexibility and peace of mind.
